Discover By George Restaurant And Bar

Walking into By George Restaurant And Bar feels like slipping into a comfortable neighborhood spot that just happens to sit in the middle of downtown Atlanta. Located at 127 Peachtree Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30303, United States, this place has become a reliable choice for business lunches, casual dinners, and those in-between moments when you want good food without pretense. I first stopped in after a long afternoon of meetings nearby, and it immediately struck me how the room balances polish with warmth. You see suits, jeans, and everything in between, which usually tells you a restaurant knows its audience.

The menu leans toward modern American comfort food, but it’s thoughtfully put together. Instead of trying to impress with gimmicks, it focuses on familiar dishes done right. One visit, I ordered the short rib, slow-cooked until fork-tender, served with seasonal vegetables that were clearly prepped in-house. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, more than 70 percent of diners say food quality matters more than trendiness, and that philosophy shows here. The kitchen seems to understand that consistency builds trust faster than flashy plating.

Drinks are a big part of the experience. The bar program is well-curated, featuring classic cocktails alongside a rotating selection of local beers. On a later visit, the bartender explained their method for balancing cocktails, starting with spirit-forward classics and adjusting sweetness and acidity based on the guest’s preference. That kind of hands-on approach aligns with best practices recommended by organizations like the United States Bartenders’ Guild, which emphasizes technique and guest interaction over speed alone.

What really stands out is how the restaurant fits into its location. Being in the heart of the city means the pace can be unpredictable, yet service stays steady. During peak dinner hours, the staff moves efficiently without making you feel rushed. Reviews often mention this balance, and after multiple visits, I can see why. One server shared that they’re trained to read tables carefully, especially downtown where diners may be heading to a show or back to the office. It’s a small detail, but it shows experience at work.

There’s also a sense of reliability that regulars appreciate. Restaurants that last in busy areas usually do so by refining processes over time. From what I observed, By George uses a streamlined ordering system and clear communication between the floor and the kitchen, which reduces mistakes and wait times. Industry research from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration highlights that operational clarity directly impacts customer satisfaction, and this place is a good real-world example of that principle.

The atmosphere supports conversation, whether you’re meeting clients or catching up with friends. Music stays at a level where you don’t have to lean in, and seating is spaced comfortably. That may sound minor, but diners consistently rate ambiance as a key factor in repeat visits. It’s one reason many downtown workers treat this restaurant as a go-to location rather than a one-time stop.

No place is perfect, and it’s fair to note that during major events or conventions nearby, wait times can stretch longer than usual. That’s the trade-off of being in a prime spot. Still, the staff is upfront about timing, which builds confidence. Transparency goes a long way in hospitality, and it’s something guests tend to remember.

Overall, the appeal lies in how naturally everything comes together. From the menu to the bar to the service, it feels intentional without being stiff. As one diner described it to me, reliably good without trying too hard, and that pretty much sums up why so many reviews stay positive. Whether you’re a local or just passing through Atlanta, this restaurant fits easily into the rhythm of the city.

  • Delicious shrimp & grits and short rib dishes, cocktails weren’t great compared to others at similar restaurants. Whipped feta app was tasty.

  • Fabulous looking restaurant inside a historic building. We had our Thanksgiving meal here - the food was very good, although not five stars for the price. It was well cooked and the portions were ok, but it wasn’t worth the $100 per person we paid (incl a bottle of wine and tips). The service was amateur (wine spilled from the bottle, forgot who had ordered what, took forever) but friendly. Perhaps it was a different crew for the holiday. I would recommend the skirt steak and the rigatoni (the mix of meats for the ragu was exceptional). Would not recommend the desserts (they were big but bland, quantity over quality).

  • I really enjoyed being here. The atmosphere is very friendly and it feels elegant. My waiter Rodney is the best waiter and I was served by him twice during my stay at the hotel. I enjoyed being served by him as he was very patient, polite, and humorous. He would complete every request efficiently and effectively with only a positive attitude. The food was really good and I was content after eating. I recommend the biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs.

  • From the moment you step into the beautifully restored Chandler Hotel, By George feels like a love letter to classic Atlanta hospitality. Everyone greets you with a smile, and the hostess had us seated within minutes—even at the height of the lunch rush (pro tip: book on OpenTable). Our server was outstanding—attentive without hovering, quick to refill drinks, and genuinely excited to talk us through the menu. Order the burger. Seriously. Juicy, perfectly seasoned, and easily one of the best in the city. Every other plate that passed our table looked equally tempting, so I can’t wait to work my way through the menu. Whether I’m meeting clients or showing friends around town, this is my go-to spot for a relaxed yet impressive lunch. Highly recommended! They offer FREE valet parking too!

  • This restaurant was really enjoyable. I was staying at the hotel, and this place was quite popular, so I grabbed breakfast one morning. The Earl Grey was delightful and Rodney was excellent! I got the sweet potato waffle and fried chicken breast, with the cutest lil maple syrup, all very reasonably priced. The next night, I needed hot sauce for a meal I ordered in and lordt almighty, they *delivered* x 10. Excellent experience. Good luck in Chicago, Rodney

  • What a fantastic experience! If you have to wait for a table, there is a super comfortable waiting area in this lavish hotel, with seriously the most comfortable lounge chair I have experienced in my life! The front of the house staff was super cordial, took my phone number, and I was called/seated within the stated amount of wait time. Rodney was my server; he had great food suggestions, gave prompt service, and was overall delightful with a beautiful smile! It was a Thursday morning, and I chose the shrimp and grits. All I have to say is OMG…. The bed of grits were silly smooth, dripping with a decadent creole cream sauce. Atop the grits: Heirloom cherry tomatoes that literally melted in my mouth while they were bursting with flavor, alongside Andouille sausage with just the right level of heat and spice…. The co-star of the dish (along with the grits) were three Jumbo Shrimp, intentionally plated, and cooked so perfectly they exploded in my mouth with the first bite, full of juicy and succulent flavor! Needless to say, it was a fantastic breakfast, and the best shrimp and grits I’ve ever had in the south!

  • Located inside the historic Candler Hotel, this restaurant blends old-world charm with a lively city vibe. From the dining room, you get a front-row view of downtown life—horseback riders, street performers, and passersby keep the energy buzzing just outside the windows. I started with the Candler Salad, and it was a standout. The crisp greens, candied walnuts, and juicy pear slices made it fresh and flavorful without feeling heavy. For my main, I went with the pan-seared salmon, cooked perfectly with a crisp skin and tender center. Pairing it with a version of the salad made the meal feel light but satisfying. The real surprise was dessert: the carrot cake. Dense, moist, and not overly sweet, it struck the perfect balance. If I had to nitpick, the texture was slightly uneven—but honestly, it was still one of the best I’ve had. Service was excellent—attentive without being overbearing—and the atmosphere makes the whole experience feel special. Overall, this is a spot where history, flavor, and great service all come together. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a memorable meal in the city.
